I was a producer and engineer for this track, recording, mixing, and mastering the project. I also worked closely with Katie to organise our sessions and ensure their vision was realised.
We used two live rooms and a control room, recording Katie’s scratch vocals and guitar beside the desk. Once we had a rough tempo and feel, Matt Wong gave me a couple of takes on drums. I then had Henry Kennard provide the guitar layers, which turned out great.
Katie and I then had a second session, during which we recorded more vocals, partly to see if we could get more consistent vocals than the initial takes and also to try out double-tracking and harmonies. I sat down with them afterwards to edit the vocals to her preference.
The Prodigal Daughter is an exciting new project from Katie McElligott Ryan. Inspired by Cocteau Twins and Elliot Smith, they bring an ethereal quality to Irish folk and acoustic indie ballads.
