For this project, I worked as an engineer. Rohan contacted me to record and mix his vocals for a track he had produced.
After a mic shootout, it was clear that a U47 FET was the right choice. Once set up in the booth, we started getting some takes. Rohan was very critical of his performance, and despite my encouragement, we ended the session with many lead vocal takes. In subsequent sessions, seeing his confidence grow as we left the studio with fewer takes and more decisive edits was encouraging.
Once the recording wrapped, I took the track home to edit, produce and mix the vocals. This took longer than anticipated because I was working with a considerable set of takes in a language I couldn’t understand.
Eventually, I finished my mix of the track, but a few weeks later, Rohan contacted me to let me know that he would be reworking the track as he was unhappy with the instrumental. The vocals I recorded with him were still used in the final track, with additional mixing and tweaks to fit the new production.
